A few weeks ago, whist browsing away on Twitter, I came across a tweet from Little Passports, promising to show kids the world without travel (yet!), or their leaving their own homes – or their parents. Taking a longer look, and what they’re doing to show kids the world, I thought, “What a perfect gift for Charlie!”
My nephew has expressed interest in maps since an early(ier) age, which makes sense – his dad’s in GIS. There’s a world map hanging on the hallway wall in his house, and he often sits in front of it, taking a look around. When I was visiting a few months ago, there we sat, and I pointed out to where I’d been over the course of the previous months.
When I asked Charlie where he wanted to go, he decidedly pointed to Madagascar. I instantly thought of the movie, but no, he said, “that’s where lemurs are.” My sister later told me he hadn’t yet seen the movie. Charlie went on to say he’d also like to go to Antarctica to see the penguins, and perhaps to the Pacific coast to see the whales.
Enter Little Passports, which offers two variations of adventures – the World Edition, which is suited for kids ages 5 – 10; and the US Edition, which is better suited for kids ages 7 – 12. Subscriptions can be made a month at a time, or six- and 12-month plan options.
To begin either edition, an Explorer Kit arrives in the mail in the form of a suitcase with a letter for globetrotting characters Sam and Sofia. Also inside of the World Edition, kids find a world map, passport and lots of other fun stuff to get started. Each subsequent month, another package arrives with an adventure letter, souvenirs, passport sticker, pictures and more. For the US Edition, the Explorer Kit includes a scratch book, US map, and disposable camera and photo scavenger hunt. Each month, a package arrives with a 32-page activity-packed journal, stickers, pop-out models, postcards and more.
Until Charlie’s ready to jet around the world with me – or, rather, until his mom’s ready to let him go! – I thought Little Passports’ World Edition would be a fun way for him to explore the world, from the comfort of home. This way, too, he can help plan our adventures!
